City Breaks In Inverness, Scotland And Things You Should Know

Inverness, widely called the capital of the Highlands, was eventually granted city status in two thousand and one and is currently the only city to be found in the Highlands. Uniquely (in the UK) Inverness has no legal boundaries which causes problems with people estimating population. The estimations are made less accurate because the population of Inverness is increasing at a dramatic rate, Inverness has the highest growth rate of any UK city. One thing we know for certain is that the city has a rather content population, in 2008 the city was placed fifth in a survey taken, by the Telegraph.co.uk, of 189 UK cities for quality of life. Following on we can safely say that Inverness is a pretty cool place in which to live and this is most likely one of the reasons which make Inverness immensely popular with tourists. Importantly there is plenty of bed and breakfast accommodations in Inverness with the majority being able to be booked online.

Inverness is also frequently referred to as the gateway to the Highlands for the obvious fact that it is the hub of the Highland public transport system and a large number of visitor attractions are within easy reach. Probably the best way to see them is by using an organized tour or day trip. A small number of coach companies visiting places such as, Urquart Castle, Loch Ness or Culloden or for the more adventurous tourist it is possible to visit such places as Orkney in a single day. It is also possible to find a small selection of city tours, such as those run by City Sightseeing.

A small percentage of visitors decide to stay in 2 towns or cities in the Highlands say Inverness and Fort William. Fort William is extremely popular with folk who enjoy sports especially hill walkers, rock climbers and ramblers who get excited going to the top of Ben Nevis which is not too far from the town’s center. In a similar way to Inverness bed and breakfast in Fort William and rather like most Scotland bed and breakfast it is often not incredibly expensive, superb value for money and amazingly clean, tidy and comfortable with unbeatable hospitality.

One important thing you should know is that Inverness’s airport is, near enough, seven miles from the city at Dalcross. It is relatively easy to catch a bus or hail a cab to the busy but small airport which is fairly reasonable. If you require a map of Inverness then you will find them free at the tourist office, which is on Castle Wynd. While you are staying in Inverness you should make a mental note to visit Inverness Museum and Art Gallery, Inverness Castle, the ’stone of tubs’ and Mercat Cross especially the Castle Garrison Encounter, an enjoyable interactive experience.
